The work you can see is a result of the Whitworth Wallis Residency at Birmingham Museum & Art Gallery. Where we had access to the collections and archives of the Gallery. During my time I was particularly intrigued that around the gallery environment there were almost no windows.The only occasion were you found a view to the outside it was either obscured due to window effect, or hidden by a blind as the outside would cause damage to the inside. Everything in the environment was sheltered, controlled where you could look and how you observed.
These three large screen prints feature the roofing of the MCC Dudderston collections, looking up from the inside of the space. When entering the collections you are told you can only view the objects from the ground; as those placed higher up are inaccessible. Disregarding what’s on offer you look up with curiosity and intrigue, once again to be offered a restricted view. This experience is recreated in each print, each ultimately being a clear surface, something to look through; but on closer inspection confronting you with the walls of your environment, the restrictions of your surroundings.
